EXTENSIVE XERO FLOR GREEN ROOF SYSTEM
Traditional and artistic roof gardens constitute certain forms of green roofs. However, their significant disadvantage is the fact that they can only be used on stable roofs. Additionally, they are expensive and require constant care. Xero Flor as an experienced manufacturer of green roofs, offers another solution: extensive greenery using a special system.
Xero Flor green roof systems allow for exceptionally efficient and durable covering of any type of roof with greenery. Using them, you can cover also very light roof structures and steep roofs. The Xero Flor system is not the only green roof system, however through many years of studies and tests in practice, it turned out to be an ideal combination of aesthetics and ecology with economic and technical benefits. Patented solutions of the Xero Flor extensive greenery system constitute a very quick and simple way to have a green roof.
The vegetation layer of green roof systems by Xero Flor is a substrate made of a mix of mineral rocks ofa carefully selected granulation. The precise thickness of the substrate layer depends on the designed greenery and in the Xero Flor system it ranges from 5 to 10 cm. It is a sufficient amount to maintain the appropriate moisture needed by plants and to ensure trouble-free development. Currently, also special rock wool and storage geotextiles are used as alternatives for the traditional mineral substrate.
ELEMENTS OF GREEN ROOF SYSTEMS
The Xero Flor green roof system is based on three basic layers necessary for the proper functioning of green roofs. It is a drainage and filtration layer, a vegetation layer and a plant layer.
The drainage and filtration layer discharges excess water, ventilates roots and improves the insultation properties of the roof structure. The drainage layer itself is required on roofs with up to a 5º inclination; in the case of roofs with larger inclines, drainage is not used. For drainage loop mats, bucket mats or river gravel of the appropriate granulation are used. Geotextiles, i.e. a filter, aimed at preventing drainage blockage through the vegetation layer, are placed on the drainage.
The vegetation layer is a substrate made of a mix of mineral rocks of theappropriate granulation. The precise thickness of the substrate layer depends on the designed greenery and in the Xero Flor system it ranges from 5 to 10 cm. It is a sufficient amount to maintain the moisture required by plants and to ensure their trouble-free development.
The plant layer of green roofs are vegetation mats covered with plants cultivated earlier. Plants used to create our green roof systems are selected in a special manner. Not all plants can grow under extreme roof conditions. Mixes used by us consist of various species of mosses, sedum, grasses, herbs and many others. If a mat is covered with greenery it is rolled in and transferred on a given roof on the previously prepared substrate. Thanks to the fact that the plants are cultivated earlier, we can be sure that nothing will happen to our green roof; also, we achieve the effect of full greenery immediately. The Xero Flor extensive greenery system is basically self-sufficient and maintains itself on its own. Natural processes of the environment in the substrate provide nutrients for plant vegetation. The state of stress in plants caused e.g. by the lack of water, is balanced through specially selected mechanisms. Death of some old plants on one hand, and natural sowing and development of young plants take place in a closed system with continuous biological renewal and regeneration of plants. Circulation which can be carefully supported is not subject to intensive care products. Hence, no herbicides need to be used. Minimum care treatments include regular control and cleaning of roof drains in spring and autumn as well as removal of roots of foreign plants and foreign growths in the coating zone.
